As a Supervisory IT Specialist within the Geologic Hazard Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
Analyzes and develops system requirements; integrates systems across disciplines; defines the scope and level of detail for system plans and policies; assesses new systems design methologies to improve functionally, performance quality and security. Leads and performs implementation activities; identifies the need for changes based on new technologies; reviews and evaluates security response policies; develops long-range plans; reviews new system, networks, and designs for compatibility and feasibility; and resolves integration issues related to the implementation of new systems with existing infrastructure. Provides expert advice, counsel, and instruction to employees, supervisors, and management on issues pertaining to systems and the administration of them and establishes and maintains strong relationship with internal and external counterparts. Develops and provides compliance oversight for implementation of systems requirements, policies, guidelines, and practices. This includes initial design, system lifecycle management, change management, and figuration management. Physical Demands The work is primarily sedentary. Some work may involve travel to and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the work site. Some employees may carry light items such as papers, books, or small parts, or drive a motor vehicle. The work does not require any special physical effort. Work Environment The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions. Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations. GS-13 Applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-13 level:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service that demonstrates accomplishment of computer project assignments that required a wide range of knowledge of computer requirements and techniques pertinent to the position to be filled. Examples of such experience may include:
information systems analysis, design, testing, and implementation; integration of new applications with existing information systems, maintaining data integrity; translation of strategic planning objectives into tactical process plans; and coordination of applications development, special information systems projects, and new computer programs. The complexity of the aforementioned work examples typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. This level of work experience would reflect wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform work of marked difficulty and responsibility.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
